Which Medicaid plans does Serenity accept?

Serenity Urgent Care accepts Michigan Medicaid, including these plans:

• HAP Empowered
• Medicaid of Michigan
• Meridian
• Molina
• Priority Health

Medicare plans and major commercial carriers are accepted as well; the full list of 21 plans is on the insurance page.

Michigan Medicaid is delivered largely through managed care plans, which is why the specific plan name on your card matters more than the word “Medicaid” itself. If the plan on your card is not in the list above, call (248) 482-8809 before you come in. Networks change, and the front desk can check yours in a minute.

What will I pay?

For most people on Medicaid, very little or nothing for a covered visit. Federal rules place strict limits on what state Medicaid programmes may charge, and Medicaid.gov sets out those limits, including groups and services that are exempt from cost sharing altogether.

Your own plan documents, or a call to the member services number on the back of your card, will tell you exactly what applies to you.

What should I bring?

• Your Medicaid card showing the plan name
• A photo ID
• A list of your current medications and any allergies

That is the whole list. There is no appointment to book and no referral to arrange for a walk-in visit.

Do I need a referral from my primary care provider?

Not for a walk-in urgent care visit at Serenity. Some Medicaid managed care plans do require referrals or prior authorisation for specialist care, which is a different situation, and your plan’s member services line is the reliable place to confirm what applies to your specific plan.

How do I find out whether I’m eligible for Medicaid?

Eligibility is broader than many people assume, and it is based on income and household size rather than employment status. Michigan accepts applications year-round, unlike marketplace coverage which is generally limited to open enrolment periods.

If you were covered previously and lost it, it is worth re-checking. Coverage can lapse for administrative reasons, such as a renewal notice going to an old address, rather than because eligibility actually changed.

What if my Medicaid coverage has lapsed?

Is urgent care the right choice on Medicaid?

For an acute problem, generally yes. Walk-in care is usually faster to access than a primary care appointment, and considerably less expensive to the system than an emergency department visit for the same complaint.

Three points worth holding together:

1. For anything that could threaten life, limb, or eyesight, go to an emergency department or call 911. Hospitals with emergency departments are required under EMTALA to screen and stabilise emergency medical conditions regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. Coverage should never factor into that decision.
2. For today’s illness or injury, urgent care is designed for exactly that, 7 days a week with no appointment.
3. For ongoing care, you still want a primary care relationship. Serenity offers primary care as well, which means a sick visit and a follow-up can sit in the same chart at the same practice.

Can I bring my child on Medicaid?

Yes. Children covered by Michigan Medicaid or MIChild are seen the same way, and children make up a large share of walk-in visits: ear infections, sore throats, fevers, rashes, and the injuries that come with being a child.

Bring the child’s own Medicaid card rather than a parent’s, along with a photo ID for yourself. A parent or legal guardian generally needs to be present to consent to treatment for a minor, so if a grandparent or another adult is bringing the child, call ahead and ask what the clinic needs.

Why do some clinics not accept Medicaid?

Participation is a business decision each practice makes, based on reimbursement rates and administrative requirements, and it varies widely from clinic to clinic within the same city.

The practical implication for you is simple: never assume. A clinic a mile away accepting your plan tells you nothing about the one next door, and a clinic that accepted it last year may not this year. One phone call before you set off saves a wasted trip and an unexpected bill.

Can I use Serenity as my regular clinic?
